Hello, and welcome to our lesson on cyberbullying and social media!

Cyberbullying is a very important topic for primary students to learn about and discuss.

As young people growing and developing in the digital technology world, we use online devices multiple times a day. 

How many times a day would you use a device that uses the internet?

It is important for us to understand how we can use these online devices safely and how we can treat each other respectfully when going online. 
Let's read through the learning objectives of our lesson and watch the video that is going to introduce us the our topic cyberbullying and social media. 

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate considerate behaviour online and respect other's feelings, opinions and privacy 
  • Understand that the way we behave online can affect people and recognise how we can to support each other  
  • Demonstrate how we can use online technology to communicate while also protecting ourselves from harmful content
  • Understand that there are support systems available online and offline and know how to access them

Activity 1

There are a lot of different ways that cyberbullying can take place.

​Watch the following videos on examples of cyberbullying and answer the questions below.

Bullying No Way

It is important to respect other people's privacy and not share personal information without permission. This video looks at how to protect yourself from cyberbullying and know that you are not alone.

Playing games online with friends is a fun way to spend time together. 
This video explores what you can do if you experience cyberbullying when playing online games.

GAMING AND CYBER BULLYING

  1. How would you feel if your friends did not include you in games?
  2. Who could you talk to if something upsetting happened online?
  3. How can you be kind to other people online?

This fact sheet from the Australian Government provides information on cyberbullying and the ways that you can protect yourself online. There are different types of support available to students that have been cyberbullied or who know someone that is being bullied online. There are also important links that students can use for more information about cyberbullying.

Bullying can happen in different ways. Sometimes the same person can be bullied in a lot of different ways. It is important to know who you can talk to and what you can do to make the bullying stop.
